Why Use Organic Fertilizers?

Organic fertilizers are made from organic material such as grass clippings, leaves, manure or even table scraps added to your compost pile. The biggest advantage of using an organic fertilizer is that organics are less harmful to the environment. While chemical fertilizers can contaminate the water table, organics break down into natural components that are recycled by the soil. They dissolve more easily than chemical fertilizers and release their nutrients over a longer duration of time. This steady feeding provides your plants with an extended application of nutrients during all stages of growth.

Organic fertilizers like yard clippings and leaves help sacrifice the density of soils such as heavy clay, allowing for better air circulation nearby the roots. Organisms in the soil, such as bacteria and nematodes(microscopic worms) are able to kill many types of harmful insect larvae thereby preventing disease. A good organic mulch also prevents weeds from getting a foothold.

Good organic fertilizers promote earthworm activity. Earthworms move through the soil creating tunnels. These tunnels allow for better air circulation. At the same time, the waste produced by the earthworms adds nutrients to the soil. Natural fertilizers also promote the growth of useful organisms.

When you use organic material for fertilizer, you are adding the basic nutrients your plants need for the best growth and development--nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Some natural fertilizers used today are in fact blends. These blends can include a variety of ingredients such as chicken manure for nitrogen; guano for phosphorus; and dried ground seaweed for potassium.

Nitrogen(N) is needful for the output of leaves, fruit and roots. Phosphorus(P) helps in leaf development. It also helps in the improvement of a strong root system. Potassium(K) helps your orchad crops to yield more flowers and fruit. A shortage of nitrogen results in yellowing of leaves and stems. When phosphorus is lacking, your plants will have small leaves and reduced fruit production. Not adequate potassium will lead to yellowing in the middle of the veins of the leaves and also results in stunted growth.

Organics do not burn plants with salts the way artificial fertilizers can. Organics also promote stronger plants and better production. They help the environment since they do not include harsh chemicals that are perilous to humans and animals.

Choosing to apply organic fertilizer to your orchad provides you with a wide spectrum of benefits that can make your orchad a gorgeous and healthy showcase. Aside from the many benefits organics offer, they have a very definite impact on the environment and they contribute the nutrients needful for growth and help plants overcome disease.
