The tomato fruitworm is a pest that can add destruction to your tomato crop. Also called the corn earworm or cotton bollworm, this pest will attack corn, beans, eggplant, orka, soybeans, tobacco and tomatoes.
The adult is a moth, mainly a light yellow to olive color, with one dark spot close to the center of each forewing. There eggs are laid single, usually on the underside of leaves, close to the plants flower or fruit. The egg is a creamy white color when first laid, then develop a redish brown band just before hatching. The larvae
that hatches from the egg is yellowish to white in color with a brown head. As the larvae matures, the color can change to a greenish yellow to a brown, even black and paler color strips that run the length of there body. These larvae grow to about 1 1/2 inches in length.
Organic Fruit
The tomato fruitworm feeds on leaves and fruit of tomato plants, distorted leaves are often the result. The larvae can also bore there way into the plants stalk or midribs. If fruit is present, the larvae will enter it soon after hatching, preferring green fruit and entering at the location of the stem. This will cause extensive damage, along with promoting decay. Having a cannibalistic character, there is rarely more than one larvae on a fruit and they usually complete there development on one fruit. Not saying if the fruit are small that it wont feed off several.
Tomato fruitworms will overwinter in most areas in there pupae stage, non-feeding stage, in the top 2 inches of your gardens soil and the adults will emerge in May and June, also there can be 4 to 5 generation in one growing season.
