Why Eat Organic Produce?

Why eat organic? Isn't that just a scam? Isn't it too expensive? Why should I spend the extra money?

These are the common objections to eating organic versus conventional foods that come up time and time again.

While it may be true that organic eating can be more expensive than eating conventional foods in the short term, the cost difference pails in comparison to the long term costs of a non-organic diet.

This article is intended to encourage you to think about your diet differently if you currently don't see the use in an organic diet.

There are many considerations surrounding the conventional versus organic debate. This article will focus on the quality of produce and the general effects on your health.

Poisons and Toxins
Many people believe there is no difference between organic and conventionally grown foods. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Conventionally grown foods are typically sprayed with pesticides, herbicides, and other chemicals designed to keep pests and weeds at bay, ie, kill them with poison.

This is done to ensure that crop harvests are as high and profitable as possible.

But if that poison kills insects, rodents, and plants...and they are living beings, what is the long term effect on humans? I am personally not prepared to assume that if certain chemicals are poisonous enough to kill a variety of living things that they won't have some detrimental effect on my own body.

While eating a single potato that has been treated with chemicals won't kill you, a lifetime of ingesting foods that are treated with these harsh chemicals adds up to severe doses of harmful chemicals.

Fertilizers - Why Are They Even Necessary?

Conventional farming also allows for various synthetic fertilizers. This is to make up for the inherent nutrient deficiency in the soil. And it is the nutrient content of the soil that dictates the nutrient content of the food being grown.

Synthetic fertilizers allow produce to grow in the absence of the nutrients that nature intended for those plants to have. The result is nutrient deficient food that had been forced to grow by the will of toxic fertilizers.

Is That A Peach Or A Tennis Ball?

The moment at which this became abundantly clear to me happened several years ago. I had been eating an organic diet for several months.

In an effort to "save money" I bought conventional peaches one day. When I bit into one, I immediately experienced with my taste buds the difference between organic and conventional produce. It was like biting into a soft tennis ball. Dry, sort of furry, nearly tasteless, and likely nutrient deficient.

Each kind of produce contains tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of different nutrients. Many of these nutrients are what give a piece of fruit their color, taste, smell, and other distinguishing qualities. When those nutrients are absent or reduced, so are their associated properties. Hence the nearly tasteless peach that I bit into.

Reality Check

Of course not all conventionally grown produce is as drastically deficient as what I just described. But when you add up the reduction in their nutrient density, plus the addition of toxins, you end up with a problem that compounds upon itself.

And with a lifetime of eating nutrient deficient food that is effectively poisonous over the long run, it is no wonder that so many people in America are riddled with a seemingly infinite litany of health problems.

There are other factors that contribute to the state of health and wellness. But one can not ignore the fact that organic produce by its very nature is cleaner and more nutrient dense than conventionally grown produce.

Organic Food - The Benefits of Natural and Organic Produce

Having spent most of my life living off of junk food, I was pretty shocked when I started learning about what goes into the produce we consume every day from the grocery store.

Most of the produce you would buy at the grocery store has been genetically modified to be more appealing to the customer. But, evidence suggests that genetically modified food can be harmful to your health. There are very few regulations on genetically modified food, and there aren’t any long term studies on how they affect human health. About 70% of the food you pick up at the grocery has been genetically modified.

Organic Fruit

Also, there are many types of insecticides used on produce, that are potentially harmful to your health. Farmers, nowadays, do not use the proper crop rotation when growing their produce. Crop rotation means: The successive planting of different crops on the same land to improve soil fertility and help control insects and diseases. The by-product of no crop rotation is that food in general is much less nutritious and raises a need for more insecticides to be used.

To avoid the health risks that can be associated with eating food that has been genetically modified, has been treated with pesticides and does not use proper crop rotation, eat organic food.

Organic food has been proven to contain sometimes 2-3 times the nutrients that conventional produce has. And with so little research available on this subject, who know how many other ways conventional produce is damaging to our health. How many other ways could organic food be better for us?

If you don’t believe it, try it. When I first began learning about organic food and the differences between it and conventional food, I went to a health food store and bought a bunch or organic produce. I couldn’t believe the difference in taste. The tomatoes I had bought in the grocery store had very little flavor and could only be used as an ingredient in a dish, definitely not something you would want to eat plain. But, the organic tomatoes I bought, I found myself just sitting down and eating plain. They actually had a garden fresh flavor to them. Usually when I would buy fruit, it would sit and rot on the table until I threw it away. It just never sounded good. Now, when I buy organic fruit, I can hardly keep myself from snacking on it all day. It just tastes so much better and healthier.

I have definitely noticed a difference in the way I feel after switching to eating mostly organic food. I have more energy. I crave healthier food. I feel more satisfied when I eat. I don’t crave junk food or sugary snacks anymore. I know other people too, who have noticed the same effects from switching to an organic diet.

Organic Vs Non-Organic - A Case For the Higher-Priced Produce

I confess. I've been avoiding the organically grown produce section at the grocery store. The fruits and vegetables often look wilted. The prices are much higher than the non-organic section. And does it really have to be grown with natural additives to be good for you?

Of all the artificial additives used in non-organic farming, the synthetic pesticides that ward off insects, bacteria and fungus infections seem to be the most maligned. But there are valid concerns about toxicity, especially in high concentrations, and potential damaging effects on cells and tissues. More importantly, foods harvested from pesticide-treated plants may also contain fewer disease-preventing micronutrients than organically grown foods. Here's why.

Organic Fruit

Plant Self-protection
The members of the plant kingdom have evolved a biochemical system to protect themselves from disease-producing pathogens, as well as environmental stress such as drought. This network can detect when a pathogen is attacking the plant's tissues. It responds by synthesizing specific substances, often referred to as phytoalexins (Greek-derived for plant defenses), to help minimize the damage.

For example, take resveratrol, a phytoalexin that has been in the news recently. The resveratrol content of a plant, like a red wine grape vine, is normally highest after an event that places the plant under stress. Say the vine is infected by a fungus micro-organism. It synthesizes resveratrol that, in turn, activates specific biochemical pathways to protect the plant from the infection.

Animal Plant Ingestion
So, what happens when an animal eats phytoalexin-protected plant compounds? Are similar self-preservation pathways activated? Does the animal's health improve?

Continuing with the resveratrol example, the answer to both questions seems to be "yes." In fact, resveratrol's positive effects have been the subject of numerous studies and more than 3,000 articles, including several in this newsletter. (Juvenon Health Journal Volume 6, 11/07 and 6/07, among others.)

And resveratrol is not alone. Health-promoting benefits for organisms farther up the food chain have been attributed to a number of pathogen-induced plant compounds. As another example, a recent study demonstrated how fermented blueberry juice, full of phytochemicals, improved the condition of mice genetically susceptible to diabetes.

Better Blueberries
Blueberries are rich in antioxidants due to the presence of significant quantities of phenolic compounds, the most common of which are known as anthocyanins. The results of a number of studies have suggested that these compounds may not only improve general health, but also help to prevent cardiovascular disease, gastric ulcers, urinary tract infections, neurodegenerative disease, cancer and diabetes.

But are all blueberries created equal in phenolic compound content? Investigators at the Université de Moncton, Canada, noted considerable variation between the berries picked in different fields, and even in the same field from one year to the next. From previous work, they were also aware of a correlation between phenolic compound levels and certain conditions, including temperature, drought and, of particular interest for this study, infection by pathogens.

While examining berries from different sources for the presence of pathogens, the researchers discovered a new bacterium, which they named Serratia vaccinnii. Additional experiments demonstrated that the concentration of antioxidants could be increased significantly by adding Serratia vaccinnii to blueberry extract and allowing it to ferment for a short period of time. These results suggest that the higher phenolic compound content in some berry crops may be pathogen-induced (like resveratrol in a red wine grape vine).

Blueberry Cocktail for Mice
Subsequently, a group of investigators from the University of Montreal compared the effects on mice of the Serratia vaccinnii-infected, fermented blueberry juice (BIBJ) versus juice prepared from normal blueberries (NBJ). The test animals for the four-week experiment were from a strain of mice predisposed to develop obesity-linked type-2 diabetes that resembles the condition in humans.

The mice on diets with NBJ or without any blueberry juice (control group) showed a predictable increase in body weight and decrease in insulin sensitivity (as determined by elevated blood-glucose levels, a marker of diabetes). For the mice whose diet included the BIBJ "cocktail," however, the results were more exciting in the context of their genetic predisposition.

They lost weight, relative to the controls. Their insulin sensitivity increased (decrease in blood-glucose), whereas their blood insulin level decreased. In fact, the pronounced positive (anti-diabetic) effects of BIBJ rivaled those obtained with a fourth group of animals fed a diet containing the popularly prescribed diabetic drug, Metformin.

(Side note: In the BIBJ group, there was also a significant increase in a specific hormone, adiponectin, secreted by fat tissue. This hormone is associated with fat removal, or catabolism, and may be partly responsible for the reduced fat and blood glucose results.)

Grocery Store Advice
Now let's go back to that more expensive organic produce section in light of what these blueberry studies seem to indicate.

1) Blueberries (by extension, produce), sprayed with anti-microbial pesticides would be devoid of pathogens that activate disease-preventing micronutrients, which seem to produce higher concentrations of antioxidants.

2) Plant microflora, micro-organisms like the Serratia vaccinnii bacteria, have the potential to increase the health benefits of our plant-derived foods. (Caveat: plant foods infected with certain fungi, like Aspergillus in peanuts, can be disease-promoting.)

Permaculture Gardening: Learn How Easy It Is to Grow Fresh, Organic Produce

As a raw vegan living in Dubai, I became interested in permaculture gardening through my struggle to get fresh, organic fruit and vegetables.

The catalyst occurred when I stumbled across a video in which a born-and-bred conventional farmer investigated permaculture in Australia, and was ultimately convinced to convert part of her land into permaculture design.

Organic Fruit

Wow, I thought. What is this permaculture business?

Well, simply put permaculture gardening involves working with nature to produce a sustainable garden design.

It all started when Bill Mollison, a wildlife biologist, spent decades in the rainforests and deserts of Australia studying eco-systems, and witnessing their destruction.

He concluded that with the widespread use of conventional agriculture and the mechanisation of our food production, 70% of the world's soils have been destroyed and 40% of our water has been contaminated.

In our quest to feed the masses, agriculture itself had become a weapon against nature.

Together with one of his students, David Holmgren, he coined the word 'permaculture', a contraction of permanent agriculture' and 'permanent culture'.

Through observing natural forests, Mollison noted that plants naturally group themselves in a mutually-beneficial cluster. He built upon this idea to develop an approach to agriculture and community design that seeks to place elements together that support and sustain each other.

"The aim is to create systems that are ecologically sound and economically viable, which provide for their own needs, do not exploit or pollute, and are therefore sustainable in the long-term.

Permaculture uses the inherent qualities of plants and animals combined with the natural characteristics of landscapes and structures to provide a life-supporting system for city and country, using the smallest practical area".

Today, the principles of permaculture have taken root across the globe. From the deserts of the Kalahari to Israel's Arava Desert, the icy north of Scandinavia to the rainforests of South America, permaculture can be practiced in any kind of climate.

What's more, it has multifold applications: from practicing permaculture design on herb farms to transforming urban lots into gardens or even helping feed a family from an apartment balcony.

Even for a rookie such as myself, I knew I'd stumbled across something big. Perhaps something that could change the world, eliminating global issues such as poverty, hunger and waste.

No matter who you are, or what your income, whether you're a small-scale gardener or large-scale farmer, the benefits of growing fresh, organic and healthy food will extend to your family, your community, the earth and its animals.

Benefits of Organic Produce

What are the benefits of organic produce? Yes produce labeled "organic" costs more. Is it worth it? Only if you want to live longer and lose weight.

By now you've heard that consuming fresh fruits and vegetables can prevent cancer and assist in maintaining a healthy weight. Fresh produce should be the foundation of your diet. A diet rich in colorful fruits and vegetables will result in vibrant health and prolong your life. Here are some frequently asked questions about organic produce and its benefits.

Organic Fruit

Q. What is organic?

A. Organic produce is grown without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides. Organic fruits and vegetables are not genetically modified in any way. Certified organic produce must be grown according to standards set by the country where it is grown.

Q. What are the nutritional benefits of organically grown produce?

A. Organic produce has more vitamins, minerals, and anti-oxidants. For years studies have chronicled the precipitous decline in the vitamin and mineral content of our fresh fruits and vegetables. This is likely due to our modern methods of farming and harvesting which have increased crop yields and appearance at the expense of nutrition.

Currently the largest study of its kind is being undertaken by the European Union to determine the benefits of organically grown produce. Early results of the study released in 2007 confirmed that organic fruit and vegetables have up to 40 per cent more antioxidants than non-organically grown produce. Anti-oxidants are beneficial in preventing cancer.

Q. How does eating organic produce prolong life?

A. Organically grown fruits and vegetables have less toxic residue from pesticides.
Many physicians and scientists believe the increased incidence of diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and even autism can be attributed to the toxic build-up of pesticides and other harmful substances from modern farming methods. The fewer toxins the healthier your immune system. A well functioning immune system allows you to naturally fight off disease.

Q. Can eating organic produce help you lose weight?

A. Yes eating organic fruits and vegetables can accelerate weight loss by ridding your body of toxins.

Toxicity from chemical additives, pesticide residue, and fertilizer causes an inability to digest food, resulting in a build up of partially digested food in the colon and intestines. This toxic buildup blocks the benefits of nutrients, including absorption of vitamins and minerals. The brain thinks the body is starving because it is lacking in vital nutrients, so it sends signals of hunger and a desire to eat - and the vicious cycle of overeating and more toxic buildup continues.

The bottom line: eating conventionally grown fruits and vegetables could sabotage the lifestyle changes you are working so hard to adopt. Switching to organic produce will prolong life and make it easier for you to maintain a healthy weight.

Yes organic costs more - but isn't your long-term health (and a smaller waistline) worth it? How much will you spend on treating health problems caused by toxicity as compared to spending a little more now on organic produce?
