An Organic Gardening Guide - Two Things it Should Not Overlook

Many people are interested in finding an organic gardening guide, these days. And these are not people who want to go back to the 1800's either. These are modern day, computer literate, mini-van families who simply want to live a healthier life.  And, they have seen the value in growing organic vegetables.

Much of this happens to be because they have heard of facts such as this: "40% more antioxidants are found in organic fruit and vegetables than in non-organic."  Today, people are simply becoming more health conscious. Some of that might be driven by the US Department of Agriculture.  The word is out that mineral levels in fruits, and vegetables have declined in commercially produced foods since the 1940's.  That's enough to cause a lot of families to think more critically about what goes into their bodies.

So now, little gardens are springing up behind people's homes all over the world. Dedicated organic gardeners are looking for everything from natural compost to natural pest control.

What exactly is this type of gardening? Well, basically it is gardening that is not dependent on chemicals, but instead, things that come from living matter.  It is making a garden that is not helped from synthetic (man made) products.  It is a garden that does not depend on you purchasing fertilizer or pesticides, which can be harmful.

In fact, if you are looking for an organic gardening guide, then you would be wise to make sure it teaches about the two critical aspects of gardening: Not having chemically based fertilizers and not having chemically based pesticides.

You need to replace the fertilizer with organic gardening compost.  And, you need to replace the pesticides with a new concept: organic gardening pest control.

A Few Things About Avocados

All people recommend you to eat loads of fruit and vegetables, but let us take a look at some fruit and see why they are so highly recommended. Therefore, let's see why people like eating avocado on a regular basis and why you should not be afraid of the fact that it is an exotic fruit.

Avocados are an excellent source of vitamin A, C and E, but they also contain a lot of potassium, iron and fibres. When you go to the store looking for avocados, make sure you choose the ones which break if you don't press them too hard. Also, they have to be coloured in a uniform way and they should definitely not have any stains or bruises.

You should keep your avocados at room temperature and this way, you should have no problem even if your avocado is green as it will definitely become ripe enough in a few days. If you want to eat such a fruit, all you have to do is to cut in half and take out its core. Squeeze some lemon on its surface so that it keeps its colour and you will get the most delicious salads and fruit cocktails.

Avocados are also excellent choices if you are interested in fruit carvings, being usually preferred for all kinds of special events. Fruit carvings can catch everyone's eye at a wedding and so on, this having become a true art and not just another way of serving fruit for lunch or for a festive meal.

A New Way of Looking at Things With Backyard Fruit Exchanges

You had a great time creating your garden in your backyard. The melons you wanted to grow this year have really done well. They are sweet and delicious, too! But, you have so many; you don't know what to do with them all! Rather than letting them go bad before you and your family have a chance to eat them all, there is another option: Fruit Exchange.

The barter system has been around as long as there have been goods to be exchanged. Long ago, if someone had a bounty of tomatoes (or other product from their garden), they could use them to purchase other things they needed, such as flour or candles, or whatever they were in need of. It worked during that time because they used the goods that they had and the bartering worked. However, after time went on and economies changed, people found that they did not always have a product with which to barter. That is where currency became necessary to use to purchase goods, rather than bartering for them. Although today, we usually exchange money for goods, in some places the barter system is still in use. You might be thinking I am talking about a third world country or an impoverished village, but I'm not. The barter system is again being used in the United States, but in a different way than it had been used in the past.

In some areas, people are forming neighborhood fruit exchanges. This is where you bring your excess fruit (and other produce) that you have grown and exchange it for other foods that you need. Your excess becomes your way to gain what you need! This exchange is a great idea... no wasting food anymore! Additionally, there are charities doing wonderful things with this system also, such as collecting people's excess backyard fruit and taking it to homeless shelters, where they do not often have the luxury of fresh produce to eat.

One of these exchanges is the Alameda Fruit Exchange and they feel that this sharing is a way to help a community become more close-knit and cohesive, while allowing everyone the delicious opportunity to share some backyard-grown produce.

This is a wonderful idea for many. Rather than having to throw away foods that cannot be consumed because there are simply too many, you can rest assured that the food you worked hard to grow is able to be consumed and not wasted. So, if you find you have some excess produce from your garden this season, rather than letting it go bad because you cannot eat it all fast enough, check to see if you can trade it. If there are no fruit exchanges in your area, maybe you could look into starting your own or donate your excess to a shelter or children's home or somewhere else that would love to have it.

5 Little things keep your diet control bit 'less
