Why Is Keyword Research Important to Organic SEO?

There has been a surge of Internet marketing mavericks and service providers on the web, and the business category, as such, has become one of the busiest of late. However, Organic SEO is not something that every other online marketer can master in a short span of time, and nor is it a strategy that can be used without apt expertise to bring the promised results.

And one of the most basic follies of the amateur search engine optimization agencies is the fact that they often pass up on the easiest of SEO techniques - which become an albatross around their neck down the line. Keyword research is one of the prime examples of the same. A lot of SEO service providers do not pay enough attention to this basic adage - and the results hence fall far from the SERP peaks they had promised to help their clients climb.

This is the basic difference where even the most affordable of SEO packages can get you results, whereas even the most high-priced of SEO packages can be impotent.

Here are some reasons why keyword research is important for an organic SEO campaign to bear fruit -

• Helps Identify Competition - A popular saying in the business circuit is that if you do not know your competition like the back of your hand, you are not going up. Thorough keyword research helps identify direct competition and thus the pros and cons of their organic SEO campaigns as well.

• Get Quality Targeted Traffic Inflow - Quality targeted traffic is only achievable when you have got the right niche consumer base's attention. And this is only possible when you are visible on the SERPs for the right keywords - to the right people!

• Better, Faster Results - SERP rankings as well as other search engine optimization goals can be attained in a faster and much more flawless manner when supplemented by proper keyword research. In fact, with the right keywords targeted, you can actually survey the competition and defeat even the staunchest of rivals - albeit with the cheapest of SEO packages in hand.

• Tracking Progress - If you have not bothered with keyword research at all, tracking the progress of your Organic SEO campaign will not only be difficult, it will be downright impossible. In fact, you need to have the right amount of keyword research put in as an effort to help track progress of the search engine optimization campaign. Failing this, not only will the affordable SEO packages' purpose fall apart, there would not be a yardstick to measure where you stand post-SEO online.

So you see, if you are a professional search engine optimization agency, you will have your hands full with problems if you have not kept your keyword research up-to-date and razor sharp from the initiation of the Organic SEO campaign.

Otherwise, the clients might not find the affordable SEO packages you provide, affordable enough - especially from the perspective of results delivered & ROI!

Organic Gardening - Growing Fresh Fruit in Containers

Container gardens are a great method of gardening that can be used with many different crops, berries, herbs, flowers, fruits and vegetables can all be grown using this technique. Ideal particularly when limited space or even soil conditions are the reason you can't plant the gardens you want, even a great way to extend your growing season.

Container gardening is also a great way to get children involved in growing plants and to learn about how and what makes plants grow, from the soil to the mature plant. Letting them learn how to grow crops with organic methods will teach them how the ecosystem works naturally in nature.

Organic Fruit

Growing fruit and berries in container is becoming more popular with the home gardener. The ability of growing fresh fruit in a limited space makes this method of gardening a cost effective way to garden, along with being less work that the traditional method of row gardening. Containers can be planted with a variety of plants and are a great way to add an attractive appearance to a patio while providing a healthy crop for you to enjoy.

Container size, soil and drainage are the three concerns that need attention when growing a container garden. A good healthy organic soil or soil-less potting mix that retains moisture, nutrients and drains well is what is needed for this type of gardening.

With container gardening, you also can get a head start on your gardening by planting indoors and extend the growing season by being able to bring your plants in when cooler weather has a threat of frost. There are many benefits that a container garden can provide.

If you are new to this method of gardening, it is best to start out with small crops like herbs, lettuce or even strawberries. Tomatoes and peppers are also two good choices to be grown in a container. Stay with the berries, fruits and vegetables that you enjoy the most, you can always expand with more containers once you are comfortable with what you are growing. Trying to grow to many plants at one time, even with the traditional method of row gardening, can get you discouraged when they become to much work.

Companion planting and succession planting are two other methods of gardening that work well with container gardening. Grow crops that can benefit each other in the same container and replace early crops with crops that mature later in the season.

Keeping your containers well watered is very important. Containers are different than the traditional row method of garden that is grown directly in the soil, containers tend to dry out easier, especially in the hot weather months.

When you grow your own organic berries, fruits, herbs and vegetable in containers, you know where they come from and what was used to grow them. There is nothing fresher than a crop picked straight from the garden to the dinner table, along being grown without the use of toxic chemicals.

Organic Gardening - Growing Fresh Fruit in Containers

A environment friendly and healthy way of gardening. Organic Gardening is away of gardening in harmony with nature. Growing a healthy and productive crop in a way that is healthier for both you and the environment.

Avoid the Junk Juices and Buy the Right Type of Juice

What's with all the different type of Juices?

You only have to walk down the supermarket aisles to see the numerous brands and types of fruit juice that are available. And, confusingly, they all claim to provide you with unparalleled benefits: 100% fruit juice, added Vitamin C, preservative free, etc. To find out how the juices are different, let's take a look at the types of juices available.

Juice Drinks

These drinks, normally found with other soft-drink beverages on shelves away from the refrigerated dairy section, are not 100% fruit juice and sometimes struggle to be 5% fruit juice! They contain water and lots of sugar, additives and flavoring, and have very few nutritional benefits. They often have names that include "punch", "cocktail" or "blend". Definitely stay away from these drinks if you are looking for health benefits.

Long-Life and Short-Life Chilled Juices

These are the majority of the juice cartons you see in the refrigerated dairy sections and in the aisles. Both Long-Life and Short-Life Chilled juices are pasteurized, the difference being that the Long-Life juices have been more heavily pasteurized and can therefore keep from between 6 to 9 months without needing to be chilled. The Short-Life Chilled juices undergo a lighter pasteurization process and will keep for 2 to 6 weeks if chilled. Neither of these is freshly-squeezed juice. The juice will either be "Not from Concentrate", meaning that the juice was extracted in the country of origin, pasteurized and then shipped, or else will be made from concentrate that was shipped to the selling country. Either way, you will not get the full benefits of organic fruit puree juices since the pasteurization and packaging process means that a lot of the nutritional value is lost.

Freshly-Squeezed Juices

These juices are, compared to the other juices on the shelves, freshly squeezed and must be drunk within 24 to 36 hours. They are not pasteurized and retain many of the benefits of juice made freshly at home or in a juice bar. Make sure that the juice is cloudy since the cloudier it is, the more nutritious it is. Very clear juices have had water added.

Organic Fruit Puree Juices

So that brings us to organic fruit puree juices. Organic Fruit Puree Juices, made at home and drunk immediately, are by far the best of the juices. Organic vegetable juices or organic fruit juices are easy to make using a juicer or juice extractor. Though there is no doubting the safety of juicing inorganic vegetables or fruits, making your own organic vegetable juice or organic fruit juice brings a new level of taste and nutrition to juicing. Because the juice is made and drunk fresh, without need for pasteurization or packaging, oxidation does not destroy the nutritional value in the juice. That means you get the full benefit of juicing!

This article was written by Piers Crispin, a convert to the great health benefits of juicing. Please visit juicers.organic-knowledge.com for articles, and an extensive on-line juicer store.

Why Go Organic? Part I - Protect Your Health

Organic foods have become more popular and easier to locate than ever in the last couple of years. Home gardeners have always known the joy of fresh, pesticide free fruits and vegetables, but now even those without the time or inclination to maintain a garden can find organic produce, beef, and poultry in their local grocery stores and through other outlets. Not so long ago, you would probably have grown very frustrated if you went in search for organic apples or carrots, but as more people have become increasingly concerned with maintaining a healthy lifestyle, the demand for organic foods has risen considerably. Organic produce delivery has become quite popular for busy households.

People who are interested in being as healthy as they can possibly be want to eat foods that are not contaminated with toxic metals, pesticides and the residue from antibiotic drugs that are fed to meat animals. They have learned that there are more than 3,000 potentially dangerous toxins in the United States food supply, and that there are laws in place that prevent foods labeled organic from containing these toxins. With this knowledge, it isn't surprising that organic food has become the fastest growing sector of America's farming and agriculture economy.

Organic Fruit

There are seven chemicals in particular that are used on our crops that are known to be difficult or impossible for the body to expel. Not only are we eating these pesticide laden foods, but they are fed to the meat animals that we also use for food. When we eat these animals, we get another dose of these chemicals.

Organic food must meet certain standards in order to be certified as organic:

o No growth hormones may be used.

o No chemical pesticides are to be used for three years prior to the present year's growing season.

o No human waste or sewage sludge can be used as fertilizer.

o No genetic modification of any description will be tolerated.

In simpler terms, organic food must be produced as it was back on your grandfather's farm. Grandpa knew many ways to manage to grow a bumper crop of vegetables and fruit without the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides! His cattle, pigs, and chickens ate good, clean grain that wasn't laced with hormones to make them grow faster and fatter and produce more meat, milk, and eggs. They weren't confined in tiny cages and stalls for their entire short lifespan.

It takes an awful lot of time and work to produce organic foods. This is one reason why their cost is higher than the mass produced produce and meat. Generally, organic farms are less than 100 acres and are operated by a family instead of a giant corporation.

It is vital for your present and future health to consume only organically grown produce and meat products that have been raised without the addition of hormones and antibiotics. The taste and quality of these foods is so much better than that of their counterparts that you will not sacrifice anything but the risk of health problems when you make the switch to organic! If all consumers would demand organic foods and refuse to consume unhealthful alternatives, not only would prices of organics be forced to drop, but the people of the world would be much healthier!

General Care For Fruit Gardening

Apply a general fertilizer at the rate recommended by the manufacturer around each fruit bush annually in spring. You need to mulch each spring with loose organic material, such as well rotted garden compost. Bush fruits are largely trouble free, although American goose berry mildew disease can be devastating if it is allowed to take hold. If your bushes show symptoms, powdery patches on young leaves, prune back affected branches by about a third before spraying the rest of the bush with a suitable fungicide. The variety is resistant to mildew.

Sawfly caterpillars can strip leaves from goose berries in late spring, pick off any caterpillars by hand and kill them. You may also need to protect bushes with netting from bud stripping bull finches in winter and the ripening fruit from other birds in summer. After planting a cordon, cut back the main shoot by about half its length and tie it in to an upright bamboo cane fixed to the support. Prune back any side shoots to leave two buds. Thereafter, prune in late summer but cut back new side shoots to leave about five leaves. In winter cut back the leading shoot by a third.

Once the cordon has reached the top of its support, you need to cut it back to one bud instead. Goose berry that are developing a lot of fruit can be thinned in late spring, and the unripe fruit used for cooking, allowing the rest to swell and ripen to be eaten fresh. Goose berries will not all ripen at once, so you will have to pick over the bushes several times. The fruit can be kept for a few weeks in a cool place or made into preserves. Blackcurrants can be picked and pruned at the same time.

Simply cut back all fruiting stem to one inch from the ground above a plump bud and then take the laden stems to the kitchen for stripping. Pick or prune off sprigs of red and white currants while the fruit is well colored but still shiny. All currants can be kept for a couple of weeks in a cool place, or frozen made into preserves. On an established goose berry bush, cut back the new growth on the leaders in winter by about half and reduce all other new growth to two buds. In summer, remove any damage wood, crossing branches, suckers and basal growth to keep the center of the bush airy and prevent it becoming congested.

The Benefits of Farmer's Markets For Organic Fruit and Vegetables

Farmer's markets offer fabulous opportunities to buy and sell organic fruit and vegetables. Such weekend markets, normally held on a Saturday or Sunday, offer fresh organic produce straight from the fields and orchards at prices significantly lower than you will find in the organic section of a greengrocer or a supermarket.

It is exceptionally rare to find such fresh produce in a supermarket, which will generally tend to store produce for months in cold storage before it hits the shelves. The farmers and food producers benefit because they have more control over their prices, and by attending a number of different markets they can help to maintain the viability of their business.

Organic Fruit

However, what are the benefits for you, the consumer? Why should you spend part of your valuable weekend browsing round a farmer's market and checking the range of produce available? The initial reaction of many is that the produce must be very expensive, and they would be unlikely to buy anything - but why? And is that in fact the case?

Sure, the prices of many fruits and vegetables will be a bit higher than you are used to paying at a supermarket, but what is more important: price or quality? Not only that, but they are not all that expensive and you get the chance to purchase high quality fresh organic fruits and vegetables at competitive prices - generally lower than the price you would pay for equivalent fresh food anywhere else.

Freshness

The food comes directly from the farmer to you, and absolutely fresh - not several weeks or even months old. In many ways it is actually more economical for you to buy food this way because:

a) You can purchase as much or as little of each item as you want. No pre-packaged goods here! If you want only one apple or two tomatoes, you can have them. You won't have unused food going soft, damp and mouldy before you can eat it all.

b) The fruit and vegetables purchased from a farmer's market are fresh. How often have you purchased produce from a supermarket, prepacked or not, and found it going soft or mouldy after a couple of days? That's because it is already old by the time you buy it.

Without the waste of over-purchasing or of old food deteriorating quickly, fresh organic produce can actually work out cheaper than supermarket fruit and vegetables. Many shop at farmer's markets just because of this very single reason. However, there is more than just that.

Organic Produce

Many say they can't tell the difference between organic and chemically grown food, but studies have indicated that most can. A 5-year European Commission study confirmed a considerable difference between organic and conventionally farmed crops and this has been supported by other studies. However, the UK Food Standards Agency disagrees. Nevertheless, most Australians believe the common-sense attitude that fruit and vegetables left to ripen naturally in the sun, rather than packed in dark boxes, will taste better - and in fact will actually have a taste!

Not only that, but organic food is grown without the poisonous insecticides that generate damaging free radicals in your body, another scientifically accepted fact - without arguments this time! Free radicals age your skin quicker and can cause atherosclerosis, a condition of your arteries that can cause strokes and heart disease. However, as long as the food is washed there should be no problems.

If you are not sure about the taste, many growers will allow you a free sample to taste before you buy. Try getting that in a supermarket!

Environmental Benefits

Among the benefits of farmer's markets are those that are beneficial to the environment:

a) Fewer food miles: buying from local producers means that food has less distance to travel with a consequent reduction in pollution and use of fossil fuel. It will also, of course, be fresher. Do you really believe that European or American produce was picked last week to be on your supermarket shelves today? The apple you buy in Sidney in December could have been in cold storage since July!

b) Less pollution by insecticides and fungicides: this is safer for you, the environment and the local bird and animal populations.

c) Less packaging: Thousands of tons of plastic packaging are wasted every year in Australia through pre-packed supermarket foods.

Reduced Waste

Hundreds of thousands of tons of fruit and vegetables are wasted every year for a number of reasons. A major reason is the lack of freshness of supermarket produce that has a very limited time on the shelves at room temperature before they have to be removed and binned.

People forced to purchase pre-packed fruit and vegetables cannot use them all before they become inedible for the same reason - lack of freshness. We must all have purchased fruit that we have had to trash because it went rotten before we use it. Farmer's markets enable you to purchase exactly what you want, and if you overbuy it's no big deal. The food is very fresh and will last until you need it.

A Great Day Out

A visit to a farmer's market is a great day out for all the family. Many have entertainment and funfairs, with burger bars and ice cream vans. Many farmer's markets in Australia are integrated with other weekend markets, so you can have a whole shopping experience, buying not only fresh organic fruit and vegetables but also arts and crafts, hand-made clothing and a whole host of other stuff.

Or just enjoy wandering around, trying the free samples. You are not obliged to buy anything and you might come across something you have never tried before. Maybe some local honey, hand-made soap or beautiful-tasting bright red strawberries or raspberries, hand-picked this morning and grown without any artificial fertilizers or pesticides. And these massive pure white crisp cauliflowers also look very tasty...

There are no doubts at all in the minds of those that visit them that of all the benefits of farmer's markets, the freshness and gorgeous taste of organic fruit and vegetables is the one that draws them every single week. However, as explained above, there are more benefits than just one, including your health, the health of the countryside and the health and nourishment of your children.

That is not to say that supermarket produce is unhealthy - far from it - but come on, which would you rather eat? A tasty red crunchy carrot less than a day old, or a limp orange thing going by the name of a carrot that was grown 2,000 miles away and picked by machine a few months ago...

Drink Water To Lose Weight: Why Replacing Juice With Water Is One Of The Best Ways To Burn Fat Fast

Want to get thin? Drink water to lose weight. Here's why replacing juices with water is one of the best ways to burn fat.

Some people think organic fruit juice is one of the best foods for weight loss. Not so.

Organic Fruit

We all know those sugared drinks are bad for us, but juice? All those commercials tell us how good it is for us. It has all those vitamins and minerals.

Yes, and it also has a lot of sugar.

But it's natural sugar, you say. True. But when it comes to being blocking your efforts to become thin, sugar is sugar.

Here are three reasons juice could be getting in the way of your ability to drop pounds:

1. Although fruit is good for you, the juice isn't because the juice lacks fiber. The fiber and the vitamins and minerals in fruit is what's good for you. The fruit sugars aren't as helpful to you, but they're counteracted by the healthy fiber. When you just drink the juice, you miss out on that fat burning fiber.

2. You also miss out on those vitamins and minerals. The processing the fruit goes through to become fruit takes out its best nutrients. Even if it's fortified with vitamins, it's not serving your body. These vitamins and minerals that manufacturers put in aren't the real thing, and they don't act the same in your body as the naturally occurring ones.

In order to efficiently burn fat, your body needs the proper balance of nutrients and fiber. When you fill up on juice, you're getting neither of these things. You're getting empty calories that are 100 percent sugar, and that sugar keeps your fat cells hanging around.

3. Also, when you fill up on juice, you aren't hydrating yourself properly. People who drink a lot of juice tend not to drink as much water because they don't feel thirsty, and the juice bloats them up so drinking water seems superfluous.

The truth is, though, that your body needs water to burn fat. Why? Because your all your body's processes depends on having enough water. Water's kind of like our body's motor oil. It keeps all the parts running.

When you're dehydrated, your body goes into crisis mode. The dehydrated is a priority it must deal with, so it stops doing other things, like burning fat.

If you want do get skinny, you need to get rid of the juices and get into the habit of drinking water. Ideally, to give your body the hydration it needs to turn on the fat burning process, you need to drink half your weight in ounces a day. So if you weight 200 pounds, you need 100 ounces, which is 12 ½ glasses of water.

One of the best ways to burn fat fast is to drink nothing but water. When you drink water to lose weight, you give yourself a head start on the path to become thin.

Drink Water To Lose Weight: Why Replacing Juice With Water Is One Of The Best Ways To Burn Fat Fast

Knowledge is one thing; action is another. Discover the one thing you must know if you want to get rid of fat. Then get moving to discover more of the best ways to lose fat fast and create the body you want.

Growing Indoor Organic Tomatoes

There are millions of gardeners who love growing tomatoes, some try growing big tomatoes, in search of that elusive record breaker, whilst others have more modest ambitions, just happy to provide extra home-grown food for their dinner table. Nowadays, organically grown food has become increasingly popular and there has been a surge of people, often without outdoor growing space, who would like to grow their own organic fruit and vegetables. Organic foods are fresher, juicier and tastier than their grocery store counterparts which are often grown to last longer, to be firmer, withstand the rigours of transportation and, in some cases, to enrich the colour of the tomato, all of which are to the detriment of flavour and this is why so many people have started growing their own organic tomatoes.

Growing indoor organic tomatoes couldn't be easier, especially since your local nursery will be able to provide you with young tomato plants which eliminate the germination process for you. There are a few things that you will need in order to grow indoor organic tomatoes successfully, a good organic soil mix, nutrients, light, water, the right container, and of course a tomato plant.

There are thousands of different varieties of tomatoes, some small, some large and some absolutely huge! Growing big tomatoes indoors is not that easy as they are much better suited to garden growing due to the fact that they are indeterminate plants (an indeterminate plant has no limit to how big it can grow). This is why, for planting indoors, you should stick to using determinate tomatoes which are much easier to grow in containers (determinate plants grow to a specific size and will not grow any bigger), so when you purchase your plant from the nursery make sure you tell them that it is for container gardening and they'll make sure you get a determinate variety and whilst you are asking this also ask for their advice on a suitable container which should be large enough to contain the root system for your plant and sturdy enough to cope with a top-heavy, fully grown, tomato-ladened plant.

Your soil mix should consist of 50% organic potting soil and 50% natural compost which is high in nutrients, both can be purchased at your local nursery. Once you have your plant, container, compost and potting soil at home don't transplant your plant into its new container straight away...leave it in front of a sunny window for a day or two so it becomes acclimatized to its new environment. When these two days have passed you can then transplant your tomato plant into its new container. You should plant your plant so only the top quarter is showing above the soil line and also insert a support stake about an inch and a half away from your new plant at this time as it will avoid damaging any roots by doing so later.

Your plant will require as much sunshine as possible, so place it in front of a south-facing window if possible, if not possible then the use of fluorescent lighting or grow lights will be required. The soil should always be kept moist, but never wet, so check this regularly. For extra boost of nutrients, you can always mix a good organic liquid fertilizer with your water once a week and feed this to your plant.

As your plant grows use the stake for extra support but ensure you do not tie tightly and do so with fabric rather than something that will cut into the stem. If you follow these guidelines you will benefit from some beautifully tasting organic tomatoes in anything from 50 to 70 days...it's not quite the same as growing big tomatoes but growing indoor organic tomatoes, allows those without outdoor growing areas to enjoy an equal measure of fulfillment.

Growing healthy organic fruit and veg throughout the year is the goal for many gardeners, professional and amateur alike but although many people would love to do so they haven't got the time! What if there was a way of growing an abundance of organic food without the hours of work required in fact, what if YOU could do this spending just eight hours a year tending to your plants?

This is POSSIBLE...check out this radical new approach to organic gardening at http://growingbigtomatoes.net where you will also learn all about growing big tomatoes as well by the way!

Fruit & Vegetable juices definitely beat most other foods having lower calories, higher vitamin and mineral content and are low in fat. They have been recognised as preventing many types of illnesses caused by our fast food diet / low nutrition diet..

Organic Fruit

Every fruit and vegetable has its own unique mixture of vitamins and minerals which you can use to make up for many deficiencies in your diet.

Juice on the Move - they are great to be consumed on the move in this high pace world in which we live in. With a decent lid and a straw you are unlikely to make a mess either in your office or car. Who has the time to sit down, peel fruit, eat it and then wash your hands?

Added Supplements - You can offer supplements in your juice like added Vitamin C, Ginseng, Mint or even Garlic to make your offering even more tempting to the new vitamin popping generation. Why not go the full distance and serve organic fruit and vegetable juices?

Profit Margins are good and equipment costs are low. All you need are several juice machines, good quality fruit & vegetables, nice decor and the ability to work hard.

You need to have the right type of footfall though. Find a site that has a lot of younger people passing by. Ideal location would be in walking distance of a large trendy shopping mall and a big complex of offices.

Initial Expenses can be high for marketing your new business. You have to let people know you have arrived by sending out emails & doing leaflet drops. Advertise in the local newspaper and radio. Offer free juice to the first thousand customers and people are sure to know that you have arrived!

Try and come up with trendy names for your juices. It might be just pure orange juice to you but how about "Refreshing Orange Bang" for a name? Your apple juice could be called "The Green Devil" whilst carrot juice could possible be named "The Energiser".

Branding is Everything in this business. Choose trendy colours that immediately scream fruit. Use reds, greens & orange in your logo and shop front design. Your slogan should echo the healthy aspects of your products. Possible slogans could include "Crave the taste & Improve your Health" or how about "The Juice that Packs a Healthy Punch"?

Smoothies are not just fruit drinks; they can also be an alternative to a snack or light meal for people who are worried about their expanding waistlines. Add healthy, easy to make sandwiches to complement your nutritious range.

Making fruit juice is easy. The real challenge lies in picking the right site, establishing your brand, building goodwill (and reputation) and generating repeat business.

How to Choose Fruits and Vegetables

When purchasing fruits and vegetables, look for those that are 'beautiful' - bright colored and unwithered - and yield slightly when pressed. However, don't be fooled by bright colors - highly colored fruit can still be 'green'. Some fruits, especially peaches and nectarines, are picked so underripe that they never will ripen, but will slowly rot from within. You can tell these fruits by their rock-hardness.

Refrigerate vegetables - except for garlic, tomatoes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and winter squash. Most fruit should be kept at room temperature for maximum flavor and aroma.

Apples: Don't buy apples that are bruised or shriveled. For eating out of the hand: Delicious McIntosh, Granny Smith, Jonathan, Winesap. For cooking: Gravenstein, Jonathan, Delicious Granny Smith, and other tart, dense apples. Store in the refrigerator in a plastic bag.

Apricots: Never buy green ones. Look for velvety skin.

Artichokes: Choose a good artichoke at the market. It should squeak when squeezed, feel heavy in your hand, have fleshy leaves, and look fresh. Brown or purple coloration near the base of the leaves, which indicates that the artichoke has been touched by frost, marks a prize - such artichokes are sweeter and tastier. Trim the stem and thorns from the outer leaves.

Asparagus: Choose fresh asparagus, without woody pores at the end of the stalk and with tight scales at the bud end. Break each stalk where it 'wants' to break to eliminate the tough ends.

Avocados: Press lightly with your thumb at the stem end. If the rind gives a little, the fruit is ripe. If the rind is hard and has sunken spots, it's over the hill. Avocados will ripen at room temperature in a closed paper bag.

Beans (green or snap): Buy crisp beans - you should be able to hear them break if you bend them. Don't buy bumpy beans - they will be tough.

Bananas - Partially green fruit will ripen at room temperature. After it is ripe you can store it in refrigerator, in spite of what Chiquita Banana used to say.

Blueberries - Look for a white bloom on the skin.

Broccoli - Choose broccoli that is dark green, with tight buds, and firm, blemish-free stems.

Cabbage- Heads should be firm, solid and heavy.

Carrots - Medium sized are the best. Don't buy hairy carrots or carrots with shriveled ends.

Cherries - Look for glossy, brightly colored fruit with stems that are bright green and attached. Don't buy cherries that have brown spots or are shriveled.

Citrus Fruit - Pick up citrus and feel its heaviness in your hand - the heavier, the juicier. Choose fruit with thin, smooth, flexible peels. Pointed fruit tends to have thick peels.

Corn - Freshness counts with corn, so buy it from a vendor who guarantees that it is picked the day it is sold. Ears should have fresh-looking green husks with young but plump and developed kennels. Silk should be shiny and yellow. If you can't use corn right away, husk it, warp each ear in plastic and store in the refrigerator.

Cucumbers - Yellow on the skin indicates over ripeness, excerpt in Kirby's cucumbers. Look for firmness and a svelte look - fat cucumbers are not as good as medium or skinny ones.

Eggplant - A shiny skin and green cap means eggplant is fresh. The lighter in weight, the fewer seeds.

Melons - Sniff the melon for ripeness. It should smell rich and fruity. Press the stem end - it should give a little. If the melon feels heavy in your hand for its size, it is probably ripe. Fore watermelons: Thump to see if it sounds hollow, a sign - not infallible - of ripeness; look for a yellowish patch (not dead white) on the bottom. For cantaloupes: choose those with an underlying creamy color. Honeydews should give slightly when pressed on the blossom end.

Peaches and Nectarines - Don't buy green tinged fruit. To ripen peaches, store them in a paper bag that is closed loosely.

Peppers - Look for bright, waxy skins. Wrinkles means old age, as does softness.

Pineapples - Smell them at the stem end for ripeness. Heft them in your hand - they should feel heavy. The rind should be tinged with orange. Also pull one of the leaves away from the fruit - it should come off easily. The leaves should be green and fresh-looking. Don't buy bruised fruit, or fruit that has soft, moist spots.

Raspberries - Look carefully for mold, and do not buy berries in boxes that have stains (an indication that the berries may be overripe)

Strawberries - They should be red all over, with no green or white parts. Check the carton to make sure that berries packed on the bottom are not green. Look for mold.

Summer squash - Buy shiny-skinned squash less than 7 inches long. Press on the ends- if ends are soft, they are probably too old.

Tomatoes - Tomatoes should be bright red and yield to slight pressure, but should not be too soft. Buy vine-ripened ones. To ripen tomatoes, cover them with a cloth and keep at room temperature.

Top 7 Benefits of Organic Gardening

We tend to think of organic gardening as something the hippies or greenies would be doing, but have you thought about how doing a little organic gardening might really benefit you? ... Not to mention your family and the environment.

Benefit 1: To me, the greatest benefit of organic gardening is the benefit of health. You know how you've grown your fruit and veggies, no chemicals, no sprays, just the way mother nature intended.

Organic Fruit

Sure you might get the odd caterpillar chewing on your cabbages, or a few aphids on your kale - even bird pecked or sunburned fruit - but you can be sure there's no chemicals on your home grown veggies. No need to scrub your veggies under running water for 5 minutes to be sure, you only need to remove dust.

Benefit 2: Convenience has to be right up there. How wonderful is it to stroll around the garden picking thing for dinner. No need to take a trip to the supermarket or greengrocer - just walk outside and you're there. This ties in nicely with all the recent hype about food miles.... Zero! You're doing your bit for the planet - nicely done!

Benefit 3: You get to eat your home-grown produce as fresh as it can possibly be. I believe that fresh food has its own 'life energy' and that's why it's incredibly important to eat things that are freshly picked. They still have that life force in them and when you eat them, you add their life energy to your own.

Imagine picking your veggies, preparing them for dinner and eating them, all within an hour. Food you buy at the supermarket may be days, weeks, even months old before you even buy it. How much 'life energy' is left by the time you eat it?

Benefit 4: You'll be saving a great deal of cash when you grow your own organic fruit and vegetables. Have you noticed how expensive food has become lately? It's staggering to say the least.

Growing your own veggies might seem expensive to set up (if you do it properly with irrigation and good soil etc.), but you'll be saving money in your first season. Just think: if you spend just a week on fruit and veg, that adds up to 60 over a year.

The beauty of organic food gardening is that if you are willing to save your own seeds from the plants you've grown, you'll have them for next spring and will need much less money to get set up for the coming growing season.

With the world economy in a real pickle (pardon the pun), organic food gardening is a great way to reduce your monthly expenses.

Benefit 5: There are so many health benefits when you become an organic gardener. I've already talked about the benefits of eating your wonderful produce, but there are further health benefits.

For a start you'll be outdoors more. Just that alone is a big health benefit. Most of us live in stuffy homes that don't have enough ventilation, with toxins exuding from the walls, cupboards, carpets etc.

You'll get a little more gentle exercise. You know you need more exercise! Then there's the vitamin D that you'll get from the sun - don't stay out long enough to risk skin cancer, but do get your daily quote (at least 15 minutes sunlight). Plus you'll be breathing in fresh air while you're in your garden.

And did you know that gardeners live longer than non-gardeners? I believe it is partly because of the health benefits I've outlined above, but there's another reason. Firstly you're keeping your brain active - thinking about what you're going to plant where, when etc. And secondly because you expect to be around for the next season. Planning ahead seems to be connected with keeping us alive longer.

Benefit 6: You'll finally have somewhere to put all your kitchen scraps and garden waste without polluting the planet any further. Most things that come from the earth can be returned to the earth by way of composting, mulching or creating a liquid fertilizer. So your waste doesn't need to add to the world's problems any more.

Benefit 7: (my personal favorite) An incredible sense of well being will wash through your body every time you walk through your garden. It doesn't matter if you're watching a tiny seed develop into a healthy young seedling, you're gleefully discovering an insect that eats a problem insect, you're enveloped with wonderful scents of aromatic herbs or are so very proud of growing the vegetables for your family's next meal - organic gardening is joyful. Just allow yourself the privilege of caring for your own organic food garden.

Don't start saying to yourself that you don't have the time, or "I'm a lousy gardener". It really takes quite little time to create a productive organic food garden once you've got the basics in place.

And if you're not a green thumb yet, get some information and have a go. No-one gets good at something until they get a bit of practice in. Meet some of the gardeners in your area. Or ask your relatives - there's bound to be someone who's will to share their gardening skills with you.... We love to do that

A Look at Edible Fruit Baskets

By their very nature, all fruit baskets, especially the original ones, qualify as edible fruit baskets. After all, when a fruit basket was filled with nothing but fruit, by definition everything in them was edible and therefore qualified as an edible fruit basket. But with today's more competitive marketplace, fruit baskets have grown to include much more than food items. In an attempt to differentiate them from fruit baskets that contain non-food items, the term edible fruit baskets was born - again nobody knows exactly where, or when, or who first used it - to signify a fruit basket containing only items that could only be eaten. Nothing drinkable; no wines, no organic juices were included, nor were any jams or jellies or spreads. Essentially, edible fruit baskets don't contain anything that should be left over after a short-lived, sumptuous feast of its contents.

Some people get confused by the term "edible fruit basket." They think that the basket itself is edible - and in some cases they are correct. There are types of edible fruit baskets where the basket is weaved out of soft edible grasses or noodles and even coated, sometimes, with chocolate or other spreads to make them more palatable. Granted, this type of basket is usually only offered in certain countries of Southeast Asia and does not account for the confusion here in America regarding the phrase, but it does lend some mystery to the term.

In general, edible fruit baskets are built around food themes to make them more attractive to the public. For example, certain edible fruit baskets contain a selection of organic fruit, combined with small amounts of organic nuts and candies. Others concentrate on foods from certain areas of the world such as France, Italy or China. Whatever can be combined into one edible fruit basket and be thought of as a special treat will be made available to a public willing to try them. The single most popular edible fruit basket today has to do with health. Packed with perfect fresh organic fruit, granola, nuts, raisins, sugar-free candy, trail mix and a bounty of other items all created from the prospective of eating healthy foods, this edible fruit basket outsells all other edible fruit baskets almost three-to-one.

Where Do You Go to Buy Organic Wine? Here's a List of Organic Wine Suppliers

Did you know that organic wines have higher concentrations of resveratrol because the grapes, vines and soil have not been treated with pesticides to prevent fungus from growing. Grapes without the aid of pesticides must enact their own defenses. Resveratrol, the compound shown to increase life span and fight disease, is one of these defenses.

While traditional red wines are still mightily good for you, some research shows that organic wines have higher concetrations of "the good stuff" and thus are even healthier. Here's a list of great places to look for organic wines.

The Best Facial Masks From Kiwi Fruit

Sure you know about useful qualities of kiwi, when we eat this fruit. But also kiwi is the wonderful cosmetologist! Vitamins and organic acids, contained in this fruit, are very useful for face skin. Facial masks from kiwi have both tonic and therapeutic effects. They cleanse skin finely; make it more elastic, fresh and young. Here you can find some easy recipes.

Kiwi mask for dry, worn and ill-nourished skin. You will need 1 tablespoon kiwi juice, 1 tablespoon olive oil and 1 yolk of egg. Mix the ingredients and apply on the face. Leave it on for about 15 minutes. Remove the mask using a sponge. The kiwi juice will stimulate the blood circulation and the mask will smooth, nourish and calm the skin.

Kiwi mask for any type of skin. Take one kiwi fruit, 2 tablespoons plain yogurt, 1 tablespoon orange juice, 1 tablespoon almond oil, and 1 cup mashed carrots. Mix all the ingredients and make a fine paste. Apply it on the face and leave until it dries. Wash your face with cold water.

Cleansing mask. Knead one kiwi fruit and put it on the face. If mass pinches skin from time to time, it is ok. It means that mask works, because organic acids give salutary effect. Wash your face in 15 minutes. Then clean the face with any tonic and put your ordinary cream.

Strawberry and kiwi facial mask for all skin types. You'll need 5-6 strawberries, 1 kiwi fruit, peeled 1/2 cucumber. Using a food processor, blend all ingredients into a thin paste. If too runny, add a teaspoon of oatmeal until a paste forms that will stay on your skin without dripping off. To use, apply liberally to face and neck area. Gently massage to lightly exfoliate your skin. Leave on for 5-10 minutes, rinse well with warm water. Your skin will feel clean and fresh.

Nourishing mask. Knead a half a banana and 1 kiwi fruit and mix them carefully. Then add 2 tablespoons natural yoghurt. Put the mask on the face. Leave on for 15-20 minutes and then wash with warm water. Then clean the face with any lotion.

Kiwi cleanser for oily skin. This is a cooling, light facial cleanser suitable for oily skin. Make it as and when needed and use immediately for best results. You will need half a kiwi fruit, 15ml plain yoghurt, 5ml skimmed milk, 5ml clear honey, 5ml fine oatmeal, 1 drop essential oil and 1 drop lavender essential oil. Place all ingredients in a blender and whiz until the mixture is smooth. Apply to face and neck with cotton pads. Massage in gently. Rinse and finish off with toner and moisturizer.

Edible Fruit Bouquets

Fruits are good sources of antioxidants and good nutrients for the body. They nourish the bodily systems and give us protection against diseases as they are rich in vital vitamins and minerals. In all occasions, edible fruit bouquets are perfect to satisfy the visitors' longing for great food. They can be served on the buffet table and remain enticing for their unique presentation.

There is a good impression when you send edible fruit bouquets. It signifies your reliability, loyalty and care as a friend. Fruits are a plenty, thus you can just mix and match them accordingly. Online shops are now catering to this kind of food service. They can customize your fruit bouquets by putting your favorite fruits altogether and add up some twists to make them more attractive.

Organic Fruit

In creating your own edible fruit bouquets, you have the liberty to consider what the occasion is first before shopping the fruits from the store. It is important that you shop fresh ones. Be creative in shaping them together so that you can come up with uniquely shaped bouquet. You can also incorporate sugar-free chocolates, less grease nuts and some low-fat foodstuff to retain the essence of health package. You will need a significant size of basket, durable wrappers and fillers like parsley, lettuce or anything leafy and green to accentuate your fruits.

If you decide to buy edible fruit bouquets online, you must canvass for which shop offers the nicest sets. Normally, most shops are at par among each other. Unique bouquets are available at slashed rates. Vendors are dedicated to offer the most unsullied, neatest and ripest fruits like pineapples, mangoes, bananas, watermelons, grapes, berries, among others. They are shaped creatively like flower petals, hearts, oblongs, stars, etc. to create a unique look.

Certain edible fruit bouquets can include organic fruits blended with mediocre quantity of candies and nuts. These are favorites among families during Thanksgiving Day, Easter, Christmas, Mother's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Father's Day, Valentine's Day, New Year's Eve and Independence Day. Birthday parties and anniversaries are also made healthier with fruits being served.

Other than basket and wrappers, you will need the utensils and skewers to create your own sets of edible fruit bouquets. You will need specialized cutters to form the shapes you want. You also need to patient in doing the cutting, peeling and arranging the fruits. It is important to be cautious as you cut and shape the fruits. You don't want to cut your fingers, do you?

Fresh edible fruit bouquets are also made to decorate some wedding receptions and baby shower parties. They make the occasion more alive being placed on the middle portions of tables. They are striking centerpieces. Maybe you can try surprising your better-half with a bouquet of fruits instead of flowers.

What Are the Best Organic Snacks For Kids?

Kids love to have snacks and that is a part of life, but as a parent we want to offer them choices that are really good for them. Replacing some common foods in your home with organic ones that will be good for them means that you will feel better when they ask to have such items. Many parents worry that their children won't like the taste of these organic snacks. Yet you can put your mind at ease with many of them as they offer a great taste that is very satisfying.

Potato chips are high in fat as well as calories. Replacing them with an organic snack called Chaos is a great alternative. This product contains a mixture of tortilla chips, pretzels, and carmel corn. Kids eat it up due to the mix of sweet with salty and they don't see to care that they aren't getting regular potato chips anymore. Newman's Own also offers a similar type of mix that is new and that seems to be getting wonderful reviews.

Energy bars are very popular for adults, but many worry that they contain items that children shouldn't have. Zbars by Clif though are made specifically for kids. They taste very good and they have a variety of vitamins and nutrients in them. Many children are active in sports these days and so such a snack can help them to have the additional boost of energy they need for practice or for a game.

Do you struggle to get your children to consume fresh fruit on a regular basis? Then they may be more open to fruit snacks. Now, you have seen lots of them offered but with plenty of sugar and other additives. X-Treme Fruit Bites offer you the chance to provide them with a great tasting fruit snack that is actually good for them. This way you won't have to continue fighting with them to consume what you want them to.

Chocolate is a common snack that many kids want and that they even can crave. Healthy Valley brand offers some great options so that you don't have to tell them no or give in to unhealthy eating. They have what is very similar to the very popular Pop Tart but in an organic form and with chocolate on the inside. This will definitely satisfy the desire that your child has for chocolate.

You should be able to find many of these organic snack foods at your local grocery store. If not, you can buy them online and have them delivered to your home. You need to be a very careful label reader too because many of the so called organic snacks out there really aren't. Sure, they do contain some organic ingredients but they aren't completely organic in nature. Understanding that difference is very important.

There are some other types of organic food snacks too that you can order from online companies including small pizzas. If your children are very picky about their snacks or just ready to try something new then this could be a great way for you to offer them. You don't even have to tell your kids that what you offer them is very good for them. They will just be happy to be getting a snack and to find it to be a very delicious treat for them at the same time.

With the availability of delicious tasting organic snacks for kids, parents don't have to be torn between offering their child something or not. They can feel good about the choices that are being made. It is also going to cut down on conflicts when your children do want snacks between meals or later in the evening after dinner.

The Cost of Going Organic

The organic lifestyle has gained so much popularity and followers ever since its rave started a few years ago. Although it hasn't garnered that much acceptance worldwide, people from all walks of life are still on the path to going organic as many are trying to adapt to the lifestyle. However, the main concern of the majority of consumers who want to join in the organic movement is that the prices of the fruit and vegetable wholesale are much more expensive and giving up the old lifestyle and trading it for a new one requires focus and change. Organic food in Australia is a little more costly than conventionally grown produce, but it has undergone certification from the Organic Retailers and Growers Association of Australia (ORGGA) which certifies that it does not have any traces of chemicals once it has been inspected.

Nowadays living the organic lifestyle is something that people are trying to acknowledge no matter how difficult the transition is. Some even build an organic house which doesn't use powered electricity for it to function and have furniture's and other things materially organic delivered. If you look at the brighter side, eating organic fruit & vegetables will make your doctor's visits lesser since the vitamins and minerals found in the organic vegetables and fruit are retained in its natural composition. By going all natural and organic, we are investing and contributing to the goodness of our health since we avoid the toxicity that the environment has for us. Using and eating organically grown food and products benefits everyone especially kids. Come to think about it, how expensive it is anyway when we spend so much on clothes, vacations, entertainment and cars?

Organic Fruit

So if you really want to save on cost and reap what it has to offer and then go for the good food and you will be able to enjoy the other things you have longer.

The 12 Most Pesticide-Ridden Fruits and Veggies

I will never forget the day my mom told me to wash strawberries. As a typical inquisitive 4 year old, I asked, 'Why?' Because fruit pickers pick their nose was her response. I then washed them - sometimes.

Now as a 31 year old, I buy organic produce which must mean it is free from boogers and by all means, it best be free from pesticides. But as a med student with a wife, two kids and a mortgage, the wallet feels stress when buying organic produce.

Demand has gone up for organic products, especially in Seattle, which has lowered the cost some; but not enough during the rough financial times.

So I find myself wondering which of the non-organic veggies and fruits are the safest to eat? A watermelon looks tough - it has a big thick skin. A juicy thin-skinned peach must be really tasty to bugs so the growers must spray the heck out of it.

This rationale obviously is not fool-proof and did not put me at ease when buying non-organic produce.

What to do? I enrolled in med school, got to the second year nutrition course and found out which are the twelve most pesticide ridden fruits and vegetables. Good plan, Ben. $50,000 later I now know which twelve they are.

Being strapped on cash again, I needed to refresh my memory. In doing so, I thought I may as well benefit the public as well. This information is not new but it definitely may be new to you.

So which are the most toxic? This information is gathered from FoodNews and they gathered the information from the Environmental Working Group

Most Popular Fruits and Vegetables with highest pesticides

Apples
Bell Peppers
Celery
Cherries
Grapes (imported)
Nectarines
Peaches
Pears
Potatoes
Red Raspberries
Spinach
Strawberries

So my rationale of thin-skinned produce was not all bad. I would have never guessed potatoes though.

So what to do? Not eat these sprayed fruits and veggies? Pretty much. Definitely do not feed them to your children. The body mass of a child is much less than a fully grown adult. Thus, it does not take many non-organic strawberries to inflict potential harm on a little one. The best method is to buy these twelve organically. If you cannot, then wash them with the pesticide-removing soaps they sell in good stores. There will still be poisons harbored in the produce but diminished at least. You can also peel apples and other produce with skins but then you lose nutrients along with some pesticides. So you may as well then go eat some plastic as it is toxic and has no nutrient value. Organic is the best bet.

Spend your tight dollars on buying these twelve fruits and vegetables organically - or keep them away from your kids.

Now that you've purchased expensive organic strawberries, what are the safest non-organic fruits and vegetables?

Most Popular Fruits and Vegetables with lowest pesticides:

Asparagus
Avocados
Bananas
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Corn (sweet)
Kiwis
Onions
Mangoes
Papaya
Pineapples
Peas (sweet)

To save you writing all this down, I have provided the option for you to view the FoodNews Wallet Guide [http://www.healthegoods.com/content/walletguide.pdf]. Cut out the guide and stick it in your wallet. Go shopping without having to guess. For those of you who want to know the details of the Environmental Working Group's report on Organophosphates Insecticides in Children's Food, you may view it.

Enjoy worry-free shopping. If there is anything that is on your mind, let me know. Ill do my best to anwer your health questions.

Organic Skin Care Products That Deliver Results You Can't Believe

While there's no denying a majority of the creams and lotions in the market are practically useless and even dangerous in some cases, there are still some organic skin care products out there which can deliver the promise of a beautiful, healthy, age resistant skin without costing the earth.

So how does one go about finding these products?

Organic Fruit

Well, the first thing to do is to look beyond your nearby stores. This is the time of the internet and almost every cosmetics manufacturer worth its salt has an online presence. You can search for and find many different organic skin care products online and the best part is, you can compare them easily too from the comfort of your home.

There is no need of trying out one cream after the other when you can easily compare them beforehand and make an intelligent choice. Evaluating the creams is pretty easy too. You just need to check their ingredients and make sure there are effective ones present inside.

Phytessence Wakame, for instance, is a highly effective natural ingredient to look for. This sea kelp from Japan has long been the secret of Japanese women's beautiful skin. It nourishes the skin with vitamin B complex and minerals like iron, calcium and potassium. It also protects your skin from the damage caused by UV rays and so helps in prevention of age spots. This kelp also prevents the breakdown of hyaluronic acid in the skin, which plays an essential part in keeping the skin firm and smooth.

Cynergy TK™ is a must have ingredient for preventing and removing wrinkles. This New Zealand sheep wool extract has the ability of making your body produce more Collagen and Elastin. An increased supply of these proteins makes your skin naturally smooth and firm from inside. No need of any artificial and invasive procedures like Botox.

Cynergy also increases the moisture content in your skin by up to 20% and helps in keeping it well moisturized and soft.

Maracuja is a special passion fruit extract found in quality organic skin care creams. It regulates the production of sebum in the skin, which helps in preventing it from becoming too oily or dry. It's an effective emollient too and gives the skin a soft, velvety feel.

Make no mistake about it. Organic skin care is pretty simple once you know which ingredients and products to look for. Do some research, make the right choice, and you will never have to worry about your skin again.

Organic Food Makes for Healthy Eating

best recipes, ethical food and organic food has become the buzz words in many instances and scenarios where the two words are used to get the attention of people who are interested in healthy eating. Many of these references to organic/ethical food may have you wondering just what truly organic food is and how it fits in to your lifestyle to help provide your family with healthy eating choices. One fact is certain, deciding on organic food means that your choices are made from high quality food that is marketed and produced in a safe way that people can trust. Gaining access to organic foods is one of the best ways to start on the path to healthy eating.

Whether you are responsible for preparing meals for an entire family or just yourself, the choice to eat health means taking the time to learn exactly what constitutes a nutritious eating regimen that is also not boring. One of the quickest ways to lose sight of the importance of eating right is to find yourself bored with your food choices. One way to recognize ethical food is to learn to read labels. The traffic light labelling system includes green dot items. These items are placed on foods that have no more than 3 grams of fat and have low salt, high fibre and are low in saturated fats.

It is important to understand that organic foods are grown under some of the best growing condition but may not always be in the green dot category. The amber dot represents medium levels of fat, salt, fibre and saturated fat. And just as the red light in traffic signals indicates you should stop, foods tagged with a red dot are high in sugars, salts and fat. Such foods should only be had as a treat on occasion and in moderation.

To achieve healthy eating with organic foods, your diet should contain plenty of vegetables and fruit, bread, rice, potatoes and pastas. Milk and dairy products, meat, fish, eggs, beans and non-dairy sources are essential and a small amount of high fat or high sugar beverages and foods can be tempered in but are not absolutely necessary. Fruit Salad

The origin of the fruit salad dates back to the 19th century, when it was included in many menus from different countries. A fruit salad is a dish comprised of a variety of fruits served with a base sauce or in their own syrup. A fruit salad is usually served as a dessert. It is also served as an appetizer called a fruit cocktail. When served as a fruit cocktail it is often prepared in an alcohol and sugar base.

The fruits that form parts of a fruit salad vary from country to country. It is determined by the seasonal availability of the fruits and where they are grown. Fruit salads often include apples, pineapples, pears, cherries, grapes, kiwifruit, peaches and oranges.

Organic Fruit

A fruit salad is an extremely nutritious dish that provides many vitamins and minerals needed by the body. It is a wonderfully refreshing dish that provides instant energy.

The fruit salad has many variations as per the taste preferred in that particular country. In Northern Europe, fruit salad is served with a mayonnaise base. Countries like Malaysia and Indonesia prefer to have it with a spicier flavor. There are also other variations served with yogurt or a sour cream base. A very common and popular way of serving the fruit salad in India is with ice cream. Fruit salad can be prepared with both fresh and canned fruits. It has thus, evolved into an extremely popular dish fulfilling both nutritional and taste criteria.

Controlling Pests And Diseases The Organic Way - Companion Planting

Companion planting is used to help control pests and diseases the natural way. There are various plants that grow well together, some however, do not do so well together.

Maintaining healthy plants is the best way to avoid Pests & Disease. Soil Rich in Organic Matter is a great starting point. Companion planting is a great way of keeping the nitrogen level up in the soil. In the vegetable garden you can mix Legume crops such as peas and beans with root crops such as carrots. Alternate planting's between rows of carrots and rows of Peas or Beans.

The Legumes contain Nitrogen sacks on the roots, which will aid in the feeding of the carrots and other root vegetables as they grow.

Plants that do well together to fight Pests & Disease are:

GARLIC:

Garlic planted near roses will help control aphids. Garlic is also valuable for repelling snails, and carrot root fly. Garlic in concentrated sprays have been seen to repel and kill whiteflies, aphids and fungus gnats among others with as little as a 10% concentration level! I have also used Garlic Sprays on Orchids without any problems.

LAVENDER:

Lavender can aid in repelling fleas and moths. Lavender also attracts bees which are feeding and beneficial insects. Dried lavender can repel moths. This is a great alternative to traditional methods and smells better too.

MARIGOLD:

Marigold has long been used as a companion plant for its natural insect repelling qualities. It will help eliminate Nematodes from the soil & will also repel ants.

MINT

Mint is useful planted amongst Brassica's as it is known to repel Cabbage Moth.

CHIVE

Chive planted around the base of fruit trees will help prevent insects from crawling up the trunk.

This is just a small sample of an almost endless list of potential companion plants. The above plants are very common and would be found in almost every garden. The next time your planting out a new Vegetable garden bed, consider using companion planting methods to help control pests & disease in your garden.

The Organic Debate - Fruits and Vegetables You Should Eat Organic

There is a lot to consider when thinking about buying organic.

Here are some general suggestions and some things to keep in mind about what fruits and vegetables to eat organic. It's always wise to ea organic as often as possible. The soil is better, and the fruit and vegetable yields are therefore much better for you as well. Remember that pesticides are very harmful to humans But we don't know for sure...the debate continues.

Organic Fruit

Pesticides

Whether pesticides are harmful to humans is still a leading debate in the produce world. Because of pesticides, the average farm land yields 200 percent more than it did before they were introduced 70 years ago; quite an incentive for some people to ignore the potential health hazards.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) however, considers 60 percent of herbicides, 90 percent of fungicides and 30 percent of insecticides to be carcinogenic. Pesticides have been shown to have many negative effects on our health like: neurotoxicity, disruption of our endocrine system, and immune system suppression.

The following foods tend to be most contaminated and should be bought organic as often as possible:

Fruit:
Apples Cherries Grapes Nectarines Strawberries Peaches Pears Raspberries

Vegetables:
Celery Cucumbers Green beans Lettuce Peppers Potatoes Pumpkins Spinach Squash

There is no doubt that eating organic is better, but if you don't have access to organic or if it's too expensive, it's still better to eat conventional vegetables and fruit rather than to avoid them altogether. They are a vital part of a good, healthy diet.

Fruit & Vegetables

There's no denying it most of us are not eating our full intake of fruit & vegetables. Fresh fruit and vegetables rarely play a role in our meal planning even though it is a medically recognised fact that they form an important part of a balanced eating plan.

Vitamin A is converted from betacarotene found in Yellow and Orange fruits and vegetables.

Vitamin C can be found in all Fruits - in particular citrus fruits like oranges and lemons.

Antioxidants found in Fruits & Vegetables (Vitamins A, C & E in particular) are known for protecting against numerous infections. Research also indicates these antioxidants may also protect against cancer.

Most traditional vegetables are available from your local supermarket. However, growing your own vegetables is by far more rewarding than buying. Interesting varieties of fruit and vegetables that are not available from your local supermarket or fruit and vegetable store can be grown at home as an alternative to travelling to purchase them.

Vegetables can be prepared in hundreds of interesting ways. Opinions differ as to whether raw vegetables are better than cooked but in reality it is more important to eat them than to worry about what the best preparation method is. As a general rule however, fresh vegetables are slightly richer in nutrients due to leaching during the cooking process.

One way to prevent leaching during cooking is to add lots of vegetables to Stews, Casseroles & Soups, this way the majority of nutrients are retained in the liquid, which is consumed rather than poured down the drain.

Another method is to keep the liquid and use, as a stock for future recipes (can be kept frozen).

I can remember my grandmother pouring the water from her boiled carrots into a glass and drinking it instead of her usual cup of tea. She also swore by this as a cure for the common cold (after she added garlic of course).

There is a lot of debate as to the nutrient differences between Organic and non-organically grown Fruit & Vegetables. There is a lot of information out there, beyond the scope of this article, I would recommend you continue your research into this area. As an Organic Gardener myself, I would only recommend the Organic variety.

Benefits of Organic Peaches

Peaches prevent constipation, combats cancer, helps stop strokes, aids digestion, helps hemorrhoids, boosts your immune system, peaches are diuretic, depurative and detoxifying. Peaches are wonderful to eat on a weight - loss program. Peaches are also high in vitamin A and C. Organic peaches are even better for you. The USDA Organic program must certify any product with the USDA Organic label. Farms that follow the USDA guidelines for Organic farming do so without the use of harmful chemicals. Flash freezing traps nutrients and phytochemicals immediately after harvest while the produce is at its peak. Peaches are more than 80 percent water and are a good source of dietary fiber. This combination makes them a perfect remedy for constipation.

One medium size peach has 7 percent of the dietary fiber you need each day. Adding fruits like peaches to your diet can keep you regular and prevent straining during bowel movements. Straining has been linked to hemorrhoids, diverticular disease, hiatal hernia and even varicose veins. Peaches are low in calories and one 100 g peach provides almost three quarters of the daily vitamin C requirement. The fruit has a gentle laxative effect. Peaches are also rich in iron and potassium.

Organic Fruit

Strikes out Cancer

A study in China showed that men and women who ate peaches more than twice a week had less risk of developing cancers of the mouth than those who did not eat peaches. This study focused on oral cancer, but peaches, like other fruits and vegetables with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, are a good way to steer clear of all kinds of cancers. As you can see the benefits of peaches are enormous. That is why we produce an organic fruit drink with 100% whey protein isolate http://www.zoejuice.com All of our fruit is certified USDA organic. We use organic peaches and organic apple juice to create a healthy and tasty 12 ounce drink.

So, You Want the Perfect Weight Loss Menu

So, you want the perfect weight loss menu, but don't know where to find it? Easy, really. Unless you hire a dietitian, the weight loss menu you ultimately can stick with is probably best worked out by you!

Here are some suggestions. One of the easy ways to lose weight is by making a list of the foods you like to eat. Write them all down, indiscriminately, honestly. Then scratch out the foods that can hinder your weight loss efforts, such as ice-cream, potato chips etc. and substitute those with 100 calorie snacks, a couple of nuts, or fruit. Plan your meat, such as chicken, or salmon. Reduce fat intake. Cook with half the amount of fat than usually. Use Olive oil instead of margarine. Cook ahead of time. Prepare your own lunches rather than eating out. While eating keep within a normal portion size. Reduce your portion size over the next days if necessary. Listen to your body. Eat slowly, fill up with water, skim milk and watery fruit and veggies along with your meal. Your stomach senses volume, not calories.
